I am a relative newbie but have remained pretty calm during the difficult last week or so. The markets are falling significantly again, is this still relatively normal and is the best advice just to HODL? Moving forward I think I will set stop losses on all holdings to protect my capital against falls like this.

When the market goes down, you should hold all and do not sell. Selling only makes you lose more capital and frustration. Hold until it is recovered and move to USDT. It will not change too much when the market fluctuates.
USDT will be a way to counter the volatility of the market and it is very effective for those who use the strategy.
If you can understand that market would go down, you can sell your holdings and start waiting to get them cheaper after the going down. The idea is easy but applying this is hard. If the market doesn't go down after you, you have problem.
