Internal tests are always done first. Open beta testing is a good thing because you get a biger number of testers and can cover more ground that way.

That's very true. You can definitely benefit from end users testing in ways that team members wouldn't normally think of.

I guess some bonuses or vouchers are the usual awards for the people that are using platform in BETA stage.
