I am looking for the best wallet to safely store my bitcoin for the next lot of years (who knows how long) is bitcoin core a safe place to do this or should i look at others?
bitcoin core is a desktop wallet, isnt it ? it is safe to store on it, unless you carelessly put your seed on phishing site.
other wallet than bitcoin core like trezor is good too. no need to put some seed or key.
