In today's world that's not really the case anymore -- exchanges are subject to so many new regulations, that privacy isn't part of the deal anymore with how demanding exchanges are when it comes to our personal information. The majority of the people enter the market through a centralized exchange, where they happen to verify themselves at. As soon as you withdraw coins from your exchange, the coins have your taint on them and the exchange and potentially the government can keep following you endlessly. Bitcoin's blockchain isn't something that's hidden away from the public. All sorts of agencies around the world are upping their blockchain analysis skills. Enjoying actual privacy requires you to cut these centralized exchanges out entirely.
