It is a great idea to look around for other possibilities. however ignoring bitcoin is not much possible. Its like ignore grandfather and listen to grandson. atleast for current scenario bitcoin is a main trust factor. no new coin has shown such a long term people trust.
Bitcoin is not as fast and not as great as other altcoins which have more advanced features but keep in mind that it is difficult to upgrade something that has a huge community and is used widely all around the world. We can't afford to break Bitcoin by implementing code full of bugs which could stop it for some time. There is no point in abandoning Bitcoin either. Bitcoin is widely used and it will be difficult to achieve the same level of adoption.
