Ethereum has a chance to overtake bitcoin as a preferred cryptocurrency - The creator Vitalik Buterin just recently said that ETH could theoretically be capable of 1m transactions per second in the future. I don't think to my knowledge that there is a competing cryptocurrency that comes close to those figures/claims.
