If coins staking rise significantly in a short time, difficulty will also spike and cause other coins to begin losing more stakes. Orphans happen more as there's more competition, but this is just the nature of PoSv3. Not everyone can always be a winner, as the stake reward is only 1,000 per block.

Note: I do not remember if orphaned blocks on PoSv3 result in resetting input coins weight, can anyone confirm this for me so I am fresh? I believe it does, but I don't quite remember. If weight resets or not then you've got different options to preserve staking income during such spikes.
