Maybe if you are playing a math based game then probably it can help you. Yet most of the gambling games are basically based on your luck or other skills like logical thinking. I think the author was trying to atleast relate it to math and did said that you will win using mathetical equation
Gambling and math are two different stories in my opinion, maybe two chapters of a same book. I think this makes more sense. Yeah! Gambling and math are two chapters of a same book because but we cant mix up both of these chapters because they alone will make a sense and give you a lesson and when both of them will be mixed up, you will get nothing.
