I am looking for the best wallet to safely store my bitcoin for the next lot of years (who knows how long) is bitcoin core a safe place to do this or should i look at others?
Yes it is safe to store all of your bitcoin to bitcoin because it is so secured and there is so many verification that you are the only one who knows it before someone open it. Actually it can not be hacked because there is a private key that you are the only one who knows it.
