I'm not sure if eth would overtake btc, it's still very far for that but I think it's possible because crypto is unpredictable. Bitcoin is the first coin present and many people know about cryptocurrency because they hear the name of bitcoin, bitcoin still the king. 
It's not about popularity. And in time spent on development. I think bitcoin will not miss anyone forward, and not because it does not want to, but simply it implements all the opportunities for growth, as well as others. And the market will simply grow up, and the position of bitcoin and Ethereum in the table will be unchanged.
