I have never mined before and thought i would try this to see how it works. Has anyone got the link for the mining software or better still an idiot guide.

hey dude. i used this guide about 2 months ago when i was a newbie to get started. it obviously depends whether you plan to mine with gpu or cpu. this is a gpu guide for litecoin, but you can apply it to any coin and use a different pool other than coinotron.
