You downloaded it without paying? It probably means that you're playing in the free mode.
It hasn't being mentioned that you wont able to earn on single player.It just being elaborated that you would need to pay up for multiplayer which means you can able to kill lots of opponents compared to single ones which you would really think up on purchasing the game because of that earning chance but basing on the payouts which can be seen here
