Can we blame these developers for doing this?  The ecosystem, today, rewards marketing and hype.. not necessarily great fundamental projects.

Hah, my question is rhetorical, of course.  I think it is fundamentally unethical to take money from investors if you do not have an intent on building a real product.

At the same time, I wonder why we make it so darned easy for them! =/
