but there's hardly much point in forking unless one can improve it? otherwise we'll just end up with another copy coin 
You are right, but look at the forks that have happened in the past. Litecoin ... larger token supply, shorter block times, changed hashing function. BCH ... increased block size. Not really breakthrough changes. All the other aspects are not changed much.
