Technically, blockchain (it is blockchain, not chain block or chain saw, yeah) is just one approach to organizing a distributed, fault-tolerant database, so it can be used in this field specifically. It may be not a very efficient solution for in-house applications where there is no issue of trust between nodes, but in a trustless environment it is probably the best solution out there, though I'm not that tech-savvy to make any definitive conclusion in this regard
