The fastest tool now is not vanitygen from NDV, but profanity from NDV 
Someone ELSE ordered him another version and this time he took ethereum vanity generator profanity and modified it for BTC.
Says now it does 170megakeys on single amd 580 card
This software is NOT for cracking 32btc puzzle, but the speed is relevant, so the guy who took p55 and p56 probably invested not much money to become fastest and collect all loot
I guess he already returned investments in hardware.
Or maybe he is using vanitygen with around 10 1080ti cards. But that's not funds efficient as 3-4 cards + better software.
