Because there are a lot a Scrypt altcoins, but not that many SHA-256 and we wanted to make it rare.
use scrypt jane then.....sha 256 is for asic rapists
it wont be rare, people with grapic cards will have no chance of getting any percent of the 3.4 coins and everyone with asic miners will rape this coin
