But so far the known merit sources are fairly established forum members who probably wouldn't risk their reputation for a few bucks, and if they sell more than a few merits the risk of getting caught is greater too.

I'm wondering where the merit is being sold and to what extent it happens. Telegram isn't my thing, but has anyone heard about sales being offered there (or anywhere else)? I thought I read about some groups that deal with the forum on Telegram or something. Could be wrong. In any case, I trust Theymos's judgement in his selection of merit sources. I'm sure abuse has or will happen, but there's not much anyone can do to prevent it.
