Actually, it is not mandatory to study economics at the university, it is our choice. People study economics in university in order for them to learn and gain some knowledge about economy and how to solve the problem in the endless needs and wants of human race. Only the interested in economics study it. While the other who are not, doesn't take it. Aside from that, economics is not all about business and making money. It's about helping people to meet there needs and there wants in life. 
Exactly, not everyone should learn Economics at the university level. You may only learn it if you have chosen business administration or finance as your professional field. In case you are engineer or IT expert there is no need to learn economics although basic knowledge of this subject is already been taught in bachelors level and that is enough for a normal person.
