You don't have to have thousands of dollars to invest. everyone invests according to their means. For some people there can be very little money for 1000 dollars, some people may even be a nice target 
I agree, we should start with whatever we can afford to lose in case of bad luck. And even if we lose we can join a bounty or take a break, earn money and reinvest fiat.
