I don't believe in whales.
To be successful at trading rule one is to not pay attention to bullshit and rumors.
I agree. Financial manipulation of the market would need huge resources (if we are talking about major cryptocurrencies), which I'm pretty sure no billinaire would spend on such a risky thing. It's also a way for people to find who to blame for their losses. I do think, though, that the articles that are published on major crypto-related portals have big indirect influence on the market. People read the articles, think that now everyone will buy/sell (mainly sell) and then don't want to lose and start panic selling. Keeping calm and holdling seems like a good idea for the bearish market to me. Trading could work as well, but only for very good traders, because trading in the bullish market is easier.
