Bitcoin opened the gates for this and much, much more. There will be more world benefit from blockchain technology than crytpocurrency, yet it is the first cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) that (A) made blockchain possible, and (B) brought blockchain to the relevance it has today in the world. We've only just begun to see what can be done with blockchain tech.
