Anything could happens in the future, if we see from what's going on in crypto world nowadays was very surprising , where most country using the crypto system for their economy and it works. I think it would be possible to change the real money in the future and using this awesome thing as the transaction and a payment tools instead.
Bitcoin itself is already a virtual money and it can be used as direct payment for goods and services as long as the specified establishment has the system to accept bitcoin transaction because virtual currency like bitcoin is already a gateway to a real money for it has a value corresponding to that real money like USD.
But not all merchants are ready to accept the payment system using bitcoin, because there are many considerations such as fluctuations, legality, regulations and so on. but I myself am convinced that the future of real money is in the form of digital or virtual, the world will be increasingly sophisticated and will increasingly recognize payment systems like this
