No need to update merit, just buy copper member if you want to. Many newbie users here but all they were asking is all about merit. This very obvious even to those newbie that were starting a thread constructively but the thread will just look like asking merit. Yet, it is not enough to be rewarded with merit. Just use the search button where to buy copper member and enjoy wearing your avatar because this is one of the benefit in buying copper member.

No need to update merit but your knowledge and your rank if you want to add signature. You can update your rank if you are able to receive merit from other member in this forum. Check your local board and check the users that received lots of merits from their constructive posts that can help you.
