When you gamble there is no friend and stranger. Gambling is gambling no matter with whom you are playing. But it is important that the games should be in friendly atmosphere. No reasoning, no misbehave and no shouting especially with your friends. These things are not good for your friendship. Gambling is not necessary but you should not quit friendship.
I think as long as you are playing the right game for you and you would win, that's what would matter. All people have something inside themselves that prefer themselves and selfishly pick everything that would benefit oneself. I think that's just human nature is and still do. I think you wouldn't have a friendly atmosphere (if you are playing with friends) because there is money involved but if there is an understanding, probably it could work out.
I think betting with friends in some ordinary games or events is a classic way of making fun. I used to do it with friends also in cases like world boxing championship, wrestling in tv or betting on basketball teams and horse race betting. It is fun but I dont see people doing it anymore. Any game that involves money is called gambling.
