I've heard about it from a few friends who kept talking about it whenever we meet and I felt out of place, so I checked it out, read some things, and decided to ultimately join. I know they are here, I'm just not sure yet what handle they use.
If you have friend talking about it, why not ask them to teach you instead? Is it because you want to surprise them someday that you have knowledge with Bitcoin? If that is why I don't think it is that so important just so you can relate to them. If you really want to learn you should ask for your friends as it will be much better than someone teaching you cryptocurrencies online, and I think they will be more than happy to do so.
