If it was just a mirage and diminishing lines/perception. Then why can you go higher up altitude and see more into the distance? Go up a mountain you can see much further, on the ground not as far. Simple, the earth curves, and the higher up you go, the further in the direction of the curve you can see. Go lower and the curve blocks what you're observing.
