Never tell that XRP or RIPPLE is one of the competitor of ETHEREUM as they dont have the same project but just the ranking.
It is safe to tell that ETH is being competing with WAVES, XEM and NEO and many project which relates as same of them.

Exactly. Many people are based on market cap to determine when a cryptocurrency has beaten another. However, that's wrong since a "cryptocurrency" such as XRP cannot be directly compared towards Ethereum. XRP doesn't have smart contract functionality, whereas Ethereum does. Also, XRP's price is largely manipulated by its internal company (Ripple) as they control the token's supply.
True competitors of Ethereum should be decentralized and provide the same functionality as ETH. There are only a select few which have already implemented smart contracts and those are: Cardano, EOS, NEO, Waves, Rootstock (Bitcoin Sidechain), Zen Protocol, Lisk, and others. So far, the strongest are Cardano and EOS since they have provided solid development and innovation to the blockchain industry.
Nonetheless, while the previously mentioned cryptocurrencies are considered as the best competitors to Ethereum, none have been able to match it in terms of popularity and mainstream adoption. Just my opinion
