Joint effort is always better. I think that if this project is really promising, then nothing will prevent you from cooperating with ETH
It is unlikely that they will cooperate. Remember the example of Ethereum Classic. They did not cooperate with the team of Ethereum. Everything is early there are differences in the vision and further development of projects.
