I managed to build the client for ubuntu:

to run it you have to install libdb4.8++
It's not graphically perfect but it works.

I added the makefile in src/leveldb and marked build_detect_platform as executable.
I compiled it with qmake-qt4 and then make (QT creator complained about not finding bitcoin.cpp)
