It's probably this reason.  Personally I would advise you to not do anything in the way of contacting them, because it's their business what they want to do (or not do) with their sMerits.  Members aren't required to send anyone merits if they don't want to, and I know of at least 2 members off the top of my head who just don't participate in the system (gameristo and TheButterZone).  I would assume they're aware of the system but they probably just choose not to use it.
