The coin would die at the end.
It's not that the moneysupply was supposed to shrink, but stop staking such large amounts. The fix has worked and Pennies are now being staked at a much lower rate. In fact, it may take years to mint the next trillion.
The money supply is somewhat faster than how we expected it to be.
