I do not really understand, why would we need something else or an alternative while Grin itself basically has 'nothing' so far.

I do not think so.
Because we want the privacy of Grin, only in our platforms instead of in our coin. Our platforms will also accept Grin as payment. Additionally, many people don't have the equipment to mine grin and would like an alternative that connects them to the Grin community.
So a crowd sale instead? Without reading the white paper how much is the premine, I mean crowdsale? And what amount of block rewards are left.
Btw one of the great things grin offered was no premine and a fair launch.
