There are a lots of people who steal credit card info and they scam with those card. Also many people may tell that the card is stolen though that is not right. That's why almost no site will allow you to use virtually without verification.
I believe that, nowadays credit cards are often even misused for online transactions, with the transaction directly the credit card has changed from the previous signature to use the pin because it is allegedly often misused.
