maxcoind and maxcoin-qt are not running at all???

maxcoind works for me... once you chmod +x it but 16 minutes in and still no peers connected so you're not missing much

with maxcoind apparently running in the terminal
./maxcoind

now what should I expect to see?? I get process running
maxcoind
but very little cpu or network action.
how to 'monitor' or assess progress?
