It don't only depends on your luck, the stats of your monster influence your chances. A detailed description for all the formulas on how important the stats actually are, can be found in the FAQ.
Well, if you already have a high skill level on your monsters, your chances decrease for a level up. But am I sure, at some point you will get an upgrade.

Else .. how can one low player beat me.. i have lvl 10 10 9 on monster and other with 5 6 5 beat me
