I'm probably not going to create any real bitcointalk.org merch anytime soon (except for the collectible coin idea), but if anyone else wants to sell such things, feel free.

It was a fun idea theymos but I wanted my damn pencils!

I'll be hoping someone runs with this idea and starts selling the merch, as long as I can pay with merit I'm happy LOL.

Is it allowed to sell items in exchange for Merit?

Of course, merit sources would be prohibited from exchanging merits for anything of value.

Strictly speaking non-merit source members would not be prohibited, but might receive negative trust or some other form of scowling from other members.
