OK I researched it:
The apparent position of the Sun during the equinoxes (caused by atmospheric lensing combined with the perspective of an observer at sea level) is consistent with an approximate distance of 3,000 miles as measured directly by a sextant.
But there would have to be multiple projectors to avoid seeing partial suns like we see waxing and waning moons. Since we don't see the projector rays, but only the sun's rays, there aren't any projectors, right? If there were only one projector, we would see waxing and waning suns, right?
