It looks like Ebay advertised on Consensus just for the sake of generating easy and very cheap global exposure. Ebay potentially accepting crypto has been all over the news even locally, so if that was indeed their main incentive, then it worked out well. It's called smart marketing.
Ebay had last year 180 million customers, that's half of all the transactions in the blockchain.
I really doubt they had a plan to advertise via some rumors.
Besides, if they would really have wanted it, they would have taken their time to deny it, to let people take the bait and make accounts there searching for the
BTC option.
