So almost ALL the development, from BitCoin itself to what we have now, was ALL paid for?

There are still those of us that believe that a fair an equitable existence is far beyond that of corporate greed and monetary gain. We are not talking dreams here, but realities that exited and still exist where development continues for developments sake, and for the sake of the betterment of Crypto AND generally life itself. Not for the monetary gain/greed that projects it's ugly head occasionally in various forms.

Yes, funds are usually required for such massive gains, but traction is never gleaned from quick massive steps, but from calculated and steady ones. So your statement about 'nothing' will develop without money is completely false in almost every way. It is only the greed the people have that stump the immediate growth of development, but in the long term, development will always be about development itself, and not about money. The two are actually mutually exclusive. People with the greed mindset are the ones that mix the two together.

Satoshi understood this very well, and built the worlds most incredible system, against the governments and financial institutions, all for free.
