Facebook like to launch a cryptocurrency! I think this project successful easily. Becuse, Facebook is most public social site. Many many people use Facebook for communication.
Why won't Facebook just use another cryptocurrency, or even Bitcoin? It looks like Facebook is trying to disrupt Bitcoin by teaming up with banks and governments. Facebook and banks trying to disrupt Bitcoin that is trying to disrupt the banks. With Bitcoin not being supported by the banking industry and large governments, Facebook is trying to get the traditional parties on their side.
It's business as usual, Mark knows how to turned everything in his favors, we don't need to expect that he will Support crypto as it is but create it's own versions but will ride with the popularity of this industry, like what you have said, Mark will make sure that the traditional institutions will back him up for further success of this new project inside crypto currency.
