Reasons behind hiding email addresses is to protect your account better. It can be called as preliminary protection for user accounts. There are so many attackers, whom will find email addresses and send phishing links to email addresses. When they find you, you will be under risks of phishing attacks.
I recommend you to emphasize one point on register email address. Users should choose "Hide email address from public?". Reasons behind hiding email addresses is to protect your account better.
