Personally I think that altcoins will rise and become more popular than Bitcoin in the future. This is because due to several drawbacks of bitcoin.
One drawback is the scalability. With the rise of bitcoin transactions, we can already observe that it takes time to confirm a transaction and this will give advantage to the true altcoins that solves this scalability issue. Another thing is that bitcoin mining needs a considerable power consumption. Therefore, alternative algorithms like PoS will be prefered by the people as those algorithms don't need such a power consumption.
I agree that there are so many useless altcoins. However, my opinion is altcoins that can truly facilitate mass adoption with less barriers won't be useless.

Probably. Knowing that Bitcoin cannot handle all of the world's transactions, should pave the way towards altcoins' success in the future. Nowadays, there's an altcoin for nearly everything we need such as privacy, scalability, and more. Whereas Bitcoin cannot fulfill certain tasks, altcoins will serve well their purpose within the mainstream world.
Still though, the competition is getting fierce each day. With Bitcoin's inception of the Lightning Network, it could render most altcoins useless. While only a few will remain actively supported and traded across several crypto exchanges, Bitcoin will still remain in the lead as a cryptocurrency for micropayments and long-term, reliable investments. Good altcoins that will become extremely useful for the future would be: Ethereum, Monero, IOTA, and Stellar. Not only they're within the top rankings in market cap, but they're also actively developed and supported by their communities and dev teams.
Nonetheless, while most altcoins are useless, there are still a few which are quite useful for the mainstream world. The mentioned alts fit the bill nicely, although they might not be the definitive ones for years to come. You'd just have to consistently do a research to determine which alts are useful and which are not. Just my thoughts
