I've got to think these large mining operations want to keep the incentive to build new systems down unless they also profit from building new systems. The easiest way to do that is to devaluate the currency. A few minor scandals here and there wouldn't hurt to buy them time to mine away while people shy away from investing in new systems due to a perceived low or negative rate of return. The question is do you believe in Bitcoin for the long term and mine something that presently doesnt appear to make sense. If that's the case then why not simply buy Bitcoin?
