To OP, you can't. After clicking the +Merit, it will show if how many merits and the title of the thread, how did you end up giving merit to mistaken posts?
I doubt he'll give it back without any good reason and they might be accused of exchanging merits since @iamsheikhadil posted this to admit his mistake that he give merit to a non-quality post.
I've known a lot of accounts that have 50 merits given to deleted posts on early days. This was obviously done by alt accounts and didn't think about being punished in the future so they recklessly spent those in one account.

many users have knowingly gave out huge number of merits to one liners, sometimes 50 merits and above
That happened a lot in the early days of the merit system, and it doesn't happen much anymore (that I know of). Nor were those mistakes. Misuse of merits, maybe.
