Bitcoin always rise first, others follow. All new investors in crypto should invest in bitcoin first, later in alts. It has been said many times here on forum, but new people seems to miss that part, they still ask the same questions as we did in the beginning.
With 1000 dollars all in bitcoin or diversifying in some other top coin. I would leave maybe 10% of that amount and invest it in some cheap alt that I like. Digibyte, tron, iota, stellar, there are many alts, cheap alts that can have a great future.
