Years ago I read about the potential danger of quantum computing for Bitcoin,

for thousands of years (yes, even before computers) we have been coming up with newer and stronger cryptographic schemes to make it stronger as efficient ways were found to break the older ones. this is not going to stop here either, it will be a constant battle of strengthening cryptography while technology improves.
so what does it mean for bitcoin? nothing really! like everything else bitcoin has to also upgrade its cryptography at some point to be ahead of the technology.

Remember when the enigma machines were cracked by the British? But the Germans knew nothing and kept using them until it was too late. I'm sure they knew the "possibility" was there, that their enemy would somehow be able to decipher their messages, but why bother? They did in fact had an improved variant used only (why?) in their submarine fleet, but there too made a (stupid) operational mistake since they considered safe enough or "too" safe to bother properly setting the things with a different random starting number (cause randomness is overrated, right?...)

And that's one of the historical mistakes in cryptography, thinking that you are already safe, when you still have the chance to improve things even more.
