That 50 point from Kyrie the highest ever for a debutant in NBA history? Earlier, Danny Green was also able to break Abdul-Jabbar's Laker debut dishing in 28 points. All these historic accomplishments were undermined because both lost their respective games. 

I think the NBA is more competitive now than the previous years.
Another record is Hornets rookie, P.J. Washington, sets a record for most 3's, hitting 7 for in a career debut. As far as Irving goes, he is capable of that, we are talking about his leadership skills here. But don't forget that he has that opportunity when he was in Cav's, although someone can argue that during that time, Irving hasn't mature yet.

There's no denying that he has evolved as a player, although we hadn't had the chance to see him becoming a leader in Celtics because of his injuries, but he did try to carry that team, alone. So let's see if a healthy Irving and a come backing KD will be the next big duo and propel them to the Eastern Conference.
