I can't figure that out either. Last I heard it was going to be at least a couple of years, but now I really don't know. And yes I'm probably jumping the gun in anticipation but I do find it exciting. Proof of stake coins are an interest of mine and have been for some time. They're friendlier to the environment than pow coins are, and make it way easier to earn too.imo, unless you plan on being super secure and a bit of a whale, i would just wait for exchanges to offer it 
I am by no means a whale, and I'll have to see what happens. In the meantime I guess I'll just keep my Eth in my hardware wallet until something's announced.
