I think you're right there. Merged mining is a bit hard for a lot of people to wrap their heads around. But it basically just makes it free money for any miner that wants to include it. The current hashrates could go much, much higher, and make it easily one of the top secured coins.

A few large Dogecoin pools adding Huntercoin could boost it immensely in a very short period.

Let's hope some more pools pick it up.
